5 ways to get your caffeine fix without coffee

Energy is much needed sometimes, especially on Monday mornings. I love coffee, but sometimes if I drink a little too much it has some negative effects. I’ve been exploring many healthy alternatives to get my caffeine fix. If you’re someone like me looking to take a break from coffee, this post is for you. I just want to quickly mention that these alternatives definitely don’t taste like coffee. Some of these alternatives have distinguished tastes. I suggest exploring your taste buds by trying them out and find what one works best for you.

Matcha is a finely ground powder of green tea leaves. Its commonly used in drinks and desserts. I’ve been in the routine of adding it to my smoothies. I will say it took some time for me to get used to the taste but now I love it! This green drink is said to have lots of amazing health benefits. But what we came for is the caffeine. An 8-ounce cup of matcha tea has around 70 mg of caffeine which very similar to a cup of coffee which has around 70 to 140mg of caffeine.

Black tea can have up to 80 mg of caffeine. If you like the taste you can drink black tea on its own, however, chai is a great way to have black tea if you want something sweeter. Chai tea is a hot beverage made by boiling black tea in milk and water with a mix of herbs and spices.

For those who enjoy mocha-flavored coffee but want to explore alternatives try brewed cacao! (not cocoa). Cocoa beans naturally contain theobromine. As a stimulant, it works similarly to caffeine, but it takes longer to kick in and it lasts longer. As opposed to caffeine, which has instant stimulation and a crash one hour later, theobromine takes 20-40 minutes to kick in and lasts about 3-4 hours.

Chocolate for breakfast? Why not! Okay, maybe not the first thing but a piece of delicious rich dark chocolate can curve coffee cravings and give you a little caffeine boost. A single ounce of dark chocolate contains about 24 mg of caffeine, whereas one ounce of milk chocolate has about one-fourth of that amount. So, if you’re looking to get caffeine, aim for dark chocolate!

Kombucha is a fermented black or green tea that is lightly effervescent and sweetened. Kombucha is said to have health benefits. Caffeine is naturally found in kombucha because of the tea used to make it. The caffeine amount is pretty minimal, averaging around just 15mg per serving. This is great for those who don’t want too much caffeine.
